The Department of Veterinary Parasitology started in the year 1976. Since then the department has been led by some of decorated stalwarts in the field of Parasitology like Late Dr. U. V. Shastri, Late Dr. M. A. Ghafoor, Dr. P. D. Deshpande and so on. The department till date produced 50 post-graduates and 03 Ph.D. as a human resource with significant contribution to the local farming community. The Department is well known for research and more than 100 research articles were published in the journals of National and International repute. The Department under the leadership of Late Dr. U.V. Shastri has contributed the research in conventional parasitology which was acknowledged in various reference books of Veterinary Parasitology. The classic work on appreciation of bar and veil structure of Theileria sp. is the global landmark. Research on Onchocerca spp. and cerebral form of Babesia bovis are also noteworthy contributions by this department. In the recent past the department has contributed immensely on identification, bionomics control measures of insect pest of livestock which has attained recognition nationally. The range of ectoparasites studied in the department starts from Phlebotomus spp, Simulium spp, Tabanus rufofrater, Pangonia spp, Haematopota spp to ticks of Rhipicephalus spp. The work on devising integrated pest management practices on livestock pests such as Culicoides spp. and ticks has been appreciated by peers as well as adopted extensively by the farming community.
